Give Your Body’s Collagen A Boost!

How To Boost Your Body’s Collagen

Collagen Skincare

The simplest way to boost your body’s collagen is to apply collagen to your skin’s surface. The best time to apply any product to your skin, including collagen, is after an enzyme peel or a microdermabrasion, as the skin is receptive to increased absorption.

There are also products to help boost collagen or prevent loss of collagen in your skin. Some of our favorites are Rhonda Allison’s C-Stem CellDermaMed’s Antiox-C Serum, and Revision’s Nectifirm. Head over to our products tab to find out how you can order these products or stop by and see us!

*While we do sell the above products at our spa, the company does not compensate us for promoting their products.

Collagen in Your Diet

Collagen can be ingested. There are many supplements that can be taken to incorporate collagen into your daily vitamin regimen.

You can also take supplements that promote collagen production in your body. These include green tea, vitamin C, and functional keratin. Creams that contain these ingredients also help stimulate collagen production when applied to your skin. A diet rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene can also aid in collagen production.

Be sure to stop by the spa to purchase one of our favorite products, Yana by Image Skincare. Yana is a drinkable collagen that helps support collagen production.

Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that repeatedly punctures the skin’s surface with very small, sterile needles. This minimally invasive process induces collagen production, thus breathing new life into your skin. Microneedling is typically for facial treatments and can help with scarring, wrinkles, and large pores.

DiDoria MedSpa does offer this service! To find out more about microneedling, give us a call or stop in!

Give Your Body’s Collagen A Boost!

Collagen and Your Body

As you age, your skin loses elasticity due to a decrease in your body’s production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. Unfortunately, we begin to lose collagen at 26 years of age. Other factors that speed up the loss of collagen include smoking, high sugar foods, and sunlight. As your body produces less collagen, the signs of aging occur such as wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of firmness and elasticity.

The good news is that collagen is available for more than just plumping your lips! Collagen is a protein that adds strength and structure to your skin. Adding collagen products to your skincare regimen can help reduce wrinkles and lines.

Stay tuned as we explore ways to boost your body’s collagen! Hint: it’s not just with skincare!

Is Your Skin Ready For Fall?

Photo by Arina Krasnikova on Pexels.com

Follow these fall skin care tips to maintain healthy skin for the autumn months.

  1. Exfoliate.
  2. Use an antioxidant serum as part of your skin care regimen.
  3. Switch to a thicker moisturizer (a cream rather than a lotion).
  4. Continue to use a daily sunscreen containing SPF 30 or higher.
  5. Use a moisturizing eye cream and lip balm.

Exfoliation is rule #1 for healthy, youthful and radiant skin. Your skin is constantly in the process of producing new skin cells, and shedding old skin cells. This is referred to as cell turnover. Different factors like nature’s elements (sun, wind or dust) can decrease cell turnover and buildup dull, dry and discolored dead skin on the surface. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the skin’s surface. In addition it prepares the skin for optimal absorption of moisturizing and anti-aging treatments. Exfoliation can be performed by chemical agents or by mechanical means such as a microdermabrasion or hydrafacial.

Antioxidants are substances that protect your cells against free radicals, which may play a role in disease. Free radicals are molecules that are a byproduct of metabolism or are created by exposure to environmental toxins. Antioxidants reduce free radicals and help repair skin and reduce inflammation. Examples of foods that contain antioxidants are dark chocolate, pecans, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, artichokes, goji berries, kale and legumes. There are many skin care products which contain antioxidants.

Moisturizing your skin is essential to good skin health. During the warmer months skin care experts recommend moisturizers that are lotions. They are lighter and have a higher water content. Creams are thicker and provide a barrier to keep skin well hydrated in the colder dryer months.

As the weather cools sun damage is still a risk. Continue to wear sunscreen even though the temperatures are milder.

A moisturizing eye cream in addition to your facial moisturizer will add another layer of skin protection. In addition applying lip balm is extremely important. Our lips have the thinnest skin of any part of our body and do not possess oil glands. They tend to dry out and crack. A lip balm is anointment that can soothe the lips.

Medium and Deep Chemical Peels

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

Medium Chemical Peels

This level of chemical peel addresses the problem of skin discoloration, especially acne or injury scarring involving the epidermis and upper portion of the dermal layer. A slightly stronger acid is used such as glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. The acid sits on your skin for a longer period of time. The skin will start to whiten and you may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation. Your technician may use a hand-held fan to cool the skin. The flake away can take several days longer than a mild peel. Smaller areas of hyper-pigmentation such as age spots, freckles or scars will become less noticeable. The procedure may take up to 90 minutes.

Deep Chemical Peels

This is a more invasive peel. It can be painful and sometimes performed under anesthesia. This type of peel fully penetrates the middle layer of skin. The peel often uses phenol or trichloroacetic acid. This type of peel has a higher risk of side effects.

Light Chemical Peel

This is the most commonly performed chemical peel. A mild acid such as salicylic acid will be applied to the skin. The acid affects only the epidermal layer. The acid is washed off after several minutes. The skin will start to whiten and you may have a slight stinging sensation. Your technician may use a hand-held fan to cool the skin. Over the next three or four days, the epidermis dries up and peels away. The treatment can be performed in 45 minutes. There is no downtime after the treatment.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

Chemical peels are one of the simplest, most effective ways to rejuvenate your skin. Signs of skin aging include brittleness, dull tone, more prominent scarring, and moderate wrinkling. Mature adults don’t produce as much collagen in their skin as they did when they were younger. Aging skin also retains less moisture. Skin cells reproduce themselves exactly as they have been in the previously and therefore reproduce discoloration and hyperpigmentation.

How do peels work?

Chemical peels act as a jump start mechanism to help the body replace healthier tissue. Basically, chemical peels involve the application of an acid to the skin. The acid varies depending on the depth of the peel and will dry up the skin. After several days the skin layers will peel off depending on the depth of the peel. This causes an acceleration of healthier replacement tissue and collagen growth.

There are three different types of peels: light, medium and deep. People get chemical peels for a number of reasons. Conditions that can be treated include fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, hyper pigmentation, scars, melasma and uneven skin tone or redness.
